Gay, from
A Scientist in the Kitchen invited me to participate in another fabulous food blogging event – this one devoted entirely to local food markets.

As you all know, I am a recently converted member of the I Love The Farmers Market Club.
No, it is not a real club, but it really should be. I have been writing lots of posts based on our Farmers Market finds. There is just nothing better than being able to support local farmers, growers and producers of food products - from veggies to bread, cheese, nuts and grains - these markets help you to support your local community in the most important of ways - SUSTAINABILITY, which should be on all our long term goal lists.
When I first started this blog, I was always a bit jealous of those food bloggers who had easy access to Farmers Markets, CSAs and the like, because I really believe that the best food is food made simple with the freshest ingredients available. So when Roberto and I moved to Saint Augustine, Florida, a wonderful town with a great weekly Farmers Market, I was thrilled. Since we moved here, it has become one of our most loved food shopping rituals. We go to the market, check out all the stalls and then go through again to purchase those things we have decided on.

Some of our favorite vendors are the bread lady, who makes wonderful breads, foccacias sweet treats and savory pockets, the citrus growers who have had some of the best Meyer lemons I have ever tasted in my life and all the many vegetable stalls. However, that is not all the Saint Augustine market has to offer – there are lots of local artisans selling their wares as well as little food stops where you can get a snack to go – or enjoy it in their little outdoor cafe. Last week we stopped and had delicious black bean and sweet potato burritos.
One of our favorite veggies to get is Swiss Chard – because we love making my Pap Pap’s Swiss Chard & Potatoes recipe.
When we get home from the market – before doing anything else, I always wash and prepare the goods we got, so they are ready to use whenever we want to cook them. It does take a little time and effort, especially when we want to get to the beach, but it makes up for it later – because when I get to the kitchen for cooking I want to be able to start right away – not spend a long time washing and prepping my veggies.
If you have a local market, you have got to check it out and make it a part of your regular routine – it may be a little more work and effort – but it is worth it – the quality is unbeatable, the flavors amazing and the prices very fair!

I love looking at those Swiss chard, I bet they taste great. I’ve never had one before and reading up recipes using them is really making me curious…

I’m so jealous of your market! We have markets here in Massachusetts, too…but not so much in the winter months. I can’t wait for the fresh fruits and veggies of spring and summer!
I love going to my Farmer’s Market weekly. It’s such a fun little outing, and I feel good knowing I’m supporting the local economy, and best of all, reducing the distance my food has to travel to get to me. Bonus points for the organic produce!
You know this is my favorite day of the week!!! I just got back with my bounty of locally grown, organic vegetables!!!
In addition to the Whole Foods, I have three of them within driving distance going N - E or W, we have a local co-op that sets up shop in a large parking lot on Saturday mornings. That’s where you relly get the local guys wares.
we have a farmer’s market in Hawaii, but not one near my home in Japan
love love love swiss chard!
I’m one of those that is jealous of people who have Farmer’s markets close.
I love going to the farmer’s markets! I can’t wait until June - which is when they open here in NJ. I have another produce market I go to in the Winter months which does bring in some fantastic fruits and veggies, but I always long for the “true” farmer’s markets to re-open.
Spring will be here soon and with that the farmers markets. Until then Iam content to drive to my oot of the way secret produce stores with amazing offerings.
Oh, this chards look sooooo fresh and the colours are amazing… our chard here is this green but the branches are white… I love your red ones!!!
Cheers Jenn!
I am jealous of your farmers market! They are trying to get something together with some folks from the mainland, but we are just so far south of the mainland! I adored the one in Ohio that I was able to visit every week this past summer. I miss it but do not miss the weather they are having this time of year.
I too am very jealous of your year round farmers market fun! Looks like I need to move south, as I sustain myself solely on vegetables during the summer months:)
I wish there was an I
I wish there was an I Love Farmers Markets club - then we could have stickers with vegetables on them! You’re so lucky! My local FM has really shrunk this Winter (we’re in VA), so I can’t wait for Spring/Summer!
i’ve been reading so much about farmers markets and i wish all the countries in the world had some of their own. I really envy u guys for having the advantage over us. Maybe someday the others will join in too.
I can’t wait until spring!
Way to go! Farmers markets are a lot of fun and it looks like it was such a beautiful day for a walk there!
I can barely wait for the snow to clear and the local produce to start showing up at the farmers market.
I’m missing the San Francisco farmers’ markets & can’t wait until spring for the Minneapolis ones to start up.
I am jealous of you. The local markets over here won’t start until spring, I believe. It is still too cold so nothing grows
One of my resolutions was to start visiting my local markets more often and I will! Great post Jen.
That’s it! I’m packing my bags and moving to Saint Augustine.
I want some Meyer lemons.
It is so nice to see that there are so many people that either utlize their local markets or desire to have one. I mean yes, it is the food that may initially draw us there, but I think it is also that the common mindset is moving towards ways that we can, as individuals help this global crisis of the environment. So keep supporting your local people, and if you don’t have them, move to Saint Augustine, like Emiline!
Gay! Hi! How appropriate that you should be the first to comment! Swiss chard is awesome - easily one of my favorite veggies and I do love my veggies!
Hi Mia! Where in MA do you live? I used to live in Western MA and the markets are great there in the summer. There is also a FABULOUS one in Boston!
Totally Romina! I agree with it all!
I know Judy is a happy girl on Wednesdays!
Wow, Donald you are in a great location to be a foodie!
Kat! Maybe you need to start one!
I am sorry Deborah…I know just how you feel! Well, there is no time like the present to make a move!
That is really something to look forward to Patsy! I agree.
Sounds good, Courtney! It is always good to have a plan for those non-Farmers Market months!
Hi Nuria! I adore the red chard! It tastes the same as the white/yellow, but I think it is so pretty.
Totally Deb, sometimes we just have to be content with the good things - but that would be great if you could get a market going!!!
Totally Brittany - I was not so sure about my move to the South, but now that I am here, I will never look back!
Yes Katie B.! Let’s get those stickers and run with it!
Yes, Kate! I too wish there were markets everywhere - but you can always start one!
Totally Jen!
Yes Cris, it was a great Farmers Market day that day.
Kevin, Kat and Ben - it won’t be too long now! Spring is springing and you will all be on your way to your markets soon enough!
I love your resolution Ben!
Come on down,Emiline!
I never noticed what adorable dimples you have, Jenn.
I am also still jealous of your produce. I started my heirloom tomato seeds, though! They’re in a little mini greenhouse, but at least we’re one step closer to spring!
Great reminder about local markets.
I can’t wait until spring when we can plant our garden and shop at the farm down the street again. My kids love picking their own fruit.
I love how the market doesn’t have a cramped street! I would love to walk there and buy some veggies!
Um gee thanks Heather! That is probably what makes me look like I am 12 years old…;) mmmmmm, heirloom tomatoes! Delish!
Thanks Beth, yeah, fruit picking, pumpkin picking all of that is so much fun to do with kids! When we lived in VT we had TONS of blackberry bushes in the backyard that Roberto’s girls loved picking. I miss those bushes…
Yes, it is a great, wide market Gizelle. YOu don’t feel cramped and claustrophobic - which is good, since I bet more people and vendors come in the summer!
Your swiss chard is beautiful!
Oh, I thought it was rhubarb. When I worked in my city centre, I used to buy food from a farm market on every Wed lunch time. However, I don’t work in the centre anymore, it’s a bit hard to get good meat. Until recently, my work place organises farm market once per month. So at least I have some good quality food from time to time…
Supporting the farm markets!
I thought I read somewhere that local was not necessarily more sustainable than non-local. I can’t remember the source, has anyone else scene it? Now I am certainly not opposed to buying local, overall I would guess that the quality is much better and I wish I had a farmer’s market around me too.
Official or not, I definetly am joining the I love the Farmer’s Market club. I go to an organic one where I live (in Paris) every sat.
That swiss chard is beautiful! It real cheers up a dish, huh.
[…] Jenn, The Left Over Queen shows off these Swiss chard (I’m jealous, I haven’t tasted Swiss chard yet) from the farmers’ market in Saint Augustine, Florida. […]
We don’t really have a market like that in the city I live in. There are green grocers.. but for a food market where you can buy fruit and vegies.. you have to travel and also pay high prices for quality. I’m always after good quality.. and it’s not easy to come by.
The market you go to sounds great! Interesting burrito’s! Were they low fat?
Hi, Jenn! I tought of saying that I will be visiting St. Augustine in May!!! I immediately remember your post on when you guys moved there. I will be on the way from Orlando to Columbia, SC so when I saw St. Augustine was in route, I quickly decided that would be my stop for resting with the kids, a little shopping and tourism
Thank you for telling us about your beatiful town!
