HUGE FOODIE BLOGROLL UPDATE!!!! PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE ON THE FOODIE BLOGROLL!!!
Well in the past several months 2 things have happened consistently that brought me to a major decision regarding The Foodie Blogroll and its fate. Number one, I have been wanting to use it as a better tool for community building. As I have said before, this is the first blogroll for foodies and we are over 1000 members strong. We have a forum, where we hold a monthly event – The Royal Foodie Joust and it has been so great getting to know all the world’s foodies better. I have started showcasing the best of the best of The Foodie Blogroll each Friday in the Finest Foodie Friday installments. But I want more community! So Roberto and I have been working on a way to make this possible. We went through several different ideas, but finally decided to give The Foodie Blogroll it’s own home: www.foodieblogroll.com. In the upcoming months we will be making this more user friendly. Right now, as Roberto puts it, it is a skeleton.
Why did we do it this way? Well lately we have been having trouble with blogrolling.com our hosting company for the blogroll. I think it is just too big for them to handle! I was getting a lot of complaints from members that the blogroll was slowing their blogs down. So we knew something had to be done immediately. Unfortunately with our wedding coming up in just weeks, we knew if we gave the Foodie Blogroll its home NOW, it wouldn’t be all we hoped, but it was better than nothing and would make life easier for all the members. So it was the lesser of two evils.
THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1)The blogroll html contains only 3 links now: a link to join the blogroll, a link to foodieblogroll.com where the entire list is being hosted and a link to the forum. If you have altered the html code I originally gave you, at all, none of these 3 links will show.
So please put the entire foodie blogroll code as it was originally sent to you in your sidebar template. I promise it will not take a long time to load three links! Also, now that we are doing all this maintenance we are visiting lots of blogs at random to check that the proper URLs are in use, if you joined The Foodie Blogroll but are no longer displaying anything about it, you will be removed from the blogroll.
2)The blogroll list is spartan at best right now and if you are one of the first 150 blogs to join the blogroll, it was before, Roberto, computer whiz, created the foodie blogroll database that I now use to do everything I need to maintain the blogroll. This means that your blog will be (temporarily) in the W section (for www.) – since we had to import all of your blog info from a word document I was using in the beginning to track members – something that proved very hard to do at 2 AM this morning. So I apologize for this inconvenience, but it is better than slow loading time, right???? ![]()
I promise this will be fixed soon – but we have to go in and manually change it all – something that wasn’t happening early this morning.
However, this is the bad news. The good news is that in the coming months www.foodieblogroll.com will be full of great features. Each member will have their own customizable page – where you can include a picture and there will be stats to show you how often you blog is viewed through the blogroll. You can also chose a subcategory that best describes your food blog so it will make it easier for people to find you, when they are searching for something specific. There will also be a section showcasing random blogs from the blogroll, something many of you from the second half of the alphabet expressed an interest in. Right now the page features the last 10 blogs that have joined introducing all of you to our newest members. These are random right now, because we had to imput those 150 first blogs last night, with today’s date - so now you will see old favorites and later the newest. So it is going to be great – but at the present time, due to personal obligations, I am not able to give you all that I hoped straight off the bat. I do apologize for that. That is not how I like to run things.
So you asked and we delivered! Boy Genius and I have given The Foodie Blogroll a new home so that your pages will load faster while still supporting the blogroll and reaping all the benefits of being part of this diverse, original and unique community of food bloggers!
So I hope everyone will be okay with this temporary solution. We will really do the best we can to get the total package up and running for you guys as soon as possible! Thank you so much for our understanding and support through all of this and I am very sorry for any inconvenience!
Since this is taking up all the room in the house today, I am not going to showcase the Finest Foodie Friday today – I don’t want to steal their thunder will all this Foodie Blogroll stuff. But stay tuned next week, I will feature my Top 5 Favorite Green Blogs!
Have a great food filled weekend everybody!

You guys are incredible!!! This is such and awesome move. I can’t wait to see what is to come!
Now that you have done this please concentrate on your wedding!
I gotta say, Jenn… not sure how you do it all. My advice is, try and enjoy some time to yourself before your wedding! Good thing you’ve got lots of support here at the Leftover Queen. Good job keeping things creative w/the foodie blogroll. I’m tired just thinking about how busy you are!! Good luck! - amy @ http://www.weareneverfull.com
I agree with Judy. We all appreciate everything you do for us, but don’t be afraid to focus on yourself for awhile! No one will blame you for it.
Jenn, sounds very exciting and a great move. Hope you’re able to relax and aren’t too stressed with upcoming wedding. Wishing you both all the best!
WOW! You are SO cool.
thanks!
Thank you Jenn and Roberto for all your hard work on this project. It’s a great idea to give the foodie blogroll it’s own home. With all you intend to put into it, the FBR will be phenomenal. Sounds like a much better way to showcase individual blogs and the idea of being able to seek out specific types of blogs will be very helpful.
this is great, thank you!
That sounds great! I will put the blogroll code back on my blog later today as I was having trouble with it loading. I love that you were able to find a solution to the problem and I can’t wait to jump in and check out the new site!
How do you ever find the time? I am still trying to figure out how to organize my time with just my blog and two new writing gigs! If I get more work I will never get to sleep.
Bravo Jenn! This is great news! The new site looks fab! I re-added the original code to my test blog and it shows the links you described, but it still says that it’s powered by blogrolling.com. Is this how it is supposed to be? Please let me know so that I can put the whole thing back up on SGCC.
Try not to let the wedding stuff get you too frazzled!
Never mind. I did it anyway and it seems to be working just fine. A million thanks to you!
You guys are great!
Sounds great!
Now concentrate on the wedding, you, and your Boy Genius. Screw everyone else.
Absolutely super!! Thanks for this huge effort, and all the best for the upcoming wedding
Apu
Hooray! This new look is so sharp! Love it!
Jenn, I think I got confused - I’m not sure I ever got the code for the foodie blogroll… I’m happy to post the button - I’ve already posted the Royal Foodie Joust button. Sorry for being such a putz. If you’d send the code again to jenshaines at aol dot com then I’ll correct it.
Great! I love the idea. Thanks for listening to your concerns!
Very much looking forward to your final product! Thanks for all of the work you and Roberto have put into the foodie blogroll Jenn.
I am so excited! You two are amazing, I can’t wait to see the final product!
hi, jen,
I’m not sure I understood where I can get the new code… can you tell me again, please!
by the way, the job you did, is amazing!!
Jenn, this sounds incredible - but your wedding comes first! Do not worry about us! And congratulations to you both (I remember all the pre-wedding stuff very well, back almost 21 years ago, GASP)
Why have you made all the links to the foodie blogs on the blogroll nofollow?
That means they don’t even get one proper linkback, let alone the hundreds originally promised.
Jen,
Just STOP it and go concentrate on your wedding!! The two of you are just awesome - where do you find the time really…!! Good luck on the next few weeks. Lots of Love.
I agree with everyone else: you focus on you, Jenn. You’ve already done so much with actually making a decision to change things NOW and attempting to make it right. NOW. So, we’ll be OK until after you get hitched
A-HA! I thought my blog was faster this morning and then thought my foodie blogroll had gone weird but now everything has fallen into place! My blog has been so slow to load lately - now I think this might be the reason.
Thanks for the change as I love the blogroll but I don’t have a lot of patience with waiting for my pages to download.
I think this sounds like a great idea and will definitely have a look around your new site.
Thanks, this is really cool! Good luck with your wedding!
Jenn and Roberto thanks SO much for all your work with the blogroll! And with your wedding coming up so soon! Can’t wait to see the final product
This sounds great- I already have my code in my sidebar,so does that mean I have to do nothing? I am amazed every day by the number of great blogs added! You do a great job, and all of us blogroll members really appreciate your efforts to build a strong blogging community!
Jenn, don’t worry about us. Just focus on your wedding and we will be here waiting for you to come back happy and relaxed. This is the least we can do for you.
Well done Jenn, I am totally in awe of you. Sometimes I feel guilty if I leave a few days between posting, but you managed to set this up?! Congratulations! I can’t wait to see the results.
Great move! My blog has been slow too and I noticed the change right away. Plus, with so many foodies, it was getting hard to browse through the list. I’m really excited about the change and I look forward to the new developments.
Hey Jenn, great idea and can’t wait to see the finished product.Get some rest!
Hi Jenn
I can’t wait to see the final product!
Concentrate on the wedding…:-)
Happy Easter from Denmark
Kudos to you both for all the good work. I’m looking forward to the new dedicated website and other features.
Now, please go concentrate on your wedding!
Sounds great, but please focus on more important things like your wedding. I was not super into wedding planning but my wedding day turned out to be one of the most incredible days of my life. Best wishes to you!
Sounds excellent. You have invested such a lot of time in doing this and I am excited about the new site.
Good luck and best wishes for your wedding,
Jon!
You are amazing!!! Both of you!!! Please don’t you ever appologize for a beautiful and wonderful and great service you do for all of us… and free!!!!!
You are so straight and responsible!!! Relax and enjoy your last “single woman’s” days before the wedding!!!!
You two are LOVELY!!!
Thanks!
Hmmm… I would need to check it out then. However, I am surprise to learn that Robert is helping you with the technical side of your blog… (very nice of him) Anyhow, concentrate on your wedding and don’t stress out (speaking from my own experience)!
hi - good move, i think will be great in the long run - i have the full HTML in my blog - can i leave it alone?
My head is spinning with all the word you’ve done on this. Impressive. And a wedding coming up? You’re amazing! I bow to you, Oh Queen!
Thanks very much everyone for all your support! It really means a lot to me (and Roberto of course). When we started this venture, we never could have guessed what a wonderful community the food bloggers of the world could be. So thanks guys! I will take all of your advice and concentrate on my upcoming wedding - which I am very excited about!
However, I wanted to address a few questions:
1) If you already have the full code up, as it was sent to you originally - for now you do not have to do anything. You are all set. In a few months, we will most likley be sending around another code - because we are still hosting on blogrolling.com - put since it is only 4 links, it is running much better. Eventually we will be hosting even those links on foodieblogroll.com
2) If you sent me an email over the weekend about your blog not appearing on the list, or wishing for a name change or URL change - all of those bugs have been fixed - there no longer appear any names associated with the blogs on the list for public viewing. So that problem has been taken care of.
3) As to the question about the “no follow” in the code…we are still working on the new code. Whatever is there now is temporary. However, the new features we will be installing on foodieblogrolling.com - the list order will change, we will be highlighting a blog of the day, the most recent blogs, etc etc, all automatic and random so people and their blogs will have a chance to be highlighted. Also there will be a random 20 blogs featured each day or week on the actual link section of the blogroll that everyone displays on their page - so everyone will get plenty of face time!
This blogroll is turing more from a typical blogroll into a foodie community in many aspects and those features will far outweigh any concerns you might have about the code as it is in the present moment.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Jenn,
Forget about us and you go be the beautiful blushing bride you are supposed to be. =) Congrats.
Jo
How exciting! I look forward to the new features, but don’t worry about it too much
We’re patient.
All this and an imminent wedding? You and Roberto are amazing! Thanks for all your hard work on keeping the blogroll going; I find it very useful (and interesting).
Jen, this is the best news I’ve read all week!
Jen, I am bad…. I can’t remember if I am on the blogroll (though I think I am, not sure, ack!)
Nice pre-wedding distraction you have there though - didn’t have enough wedding things to do?
Thank you for the update!
I did notice there are less links with my Foodie Blogroll icon. Prior to the change, my blog used to load slower too because of it.. and it was one of the reasons why I had second thoughts about being a part of it.. because I didn’t want my blog to be a pain to access. I had noticed other people’s blogs taking a while to load too.
Anyway.. you and Roberto are geniuses and make a great team!
Congratulations on the Yogi magazine feature! That’s exciting!!
Thank you for all the changes you made Jenna
I love the Foodie Blogroll
Hi Jenn
Thank you for your welcoming comment. I am thrilled to be a member of what appears to be one of the most progressive blogging blogs around. I also love to get involved. Don’t be shy about asking for my help, contributions or anything else I can do to assist.
Thanks again……………Mark
Hi Jenn:)
Thanks so much for all your hard work! I love the Foodie Blogroll and I know it’ll be better than ever! Let me know if I can do anything to help!
Chris:)
Thanks again everyone for your support and comments!
Hi Jenn,
Thanks for all the hardwork! Didnt know you are also preparing for wedding. My congratulations to you first!! Dont worry about us. Foodie Blogroll is great! Strawberry Moments will be here for you anytime so we can wait.. =)
I just want to add my congrats (in advance) on your wedding. I was so frazzled with details in the week or two before my wedding I can’t imagine even having time to blog, let alone this sort of undertaking. More power to you.
Be sure to have the kitchen set aside some appetizers for you. I’ve heard of too many people (and been one myself) who missed out on their own tasty apps because they were too busy with photos or greeting folks
Good luck with all the changes! I am very grateful for the work you all are putting into this. I dabble in xhtml/css stuff a bit and I know how difficult it can sometimes be.
I’ve seen in some bloggers that their list of Foodie blogroll is diferent than mine. They have a list of top 10 blogers. What do I have to do to change my list and update it? I have no idea.
Regards from Spain
Pilar
Wow, Jenn! You guys are incredible! Beginning a new site just for us, right before your wedding??? *faints* Thank you so much for all of your hard work. Seriously, I appreciate it more than you know.
