Lemon-Ricotta Ice Cream with a Kick and Mango-Orange Sorbetto…and a meme….
Gosh, it feels like forever since I actually posted a recipe on this blog! The scary thing is that I have A LOT of them to post! With the New Foodie Blogroll launch over, I have accumulated a lot of recipes and photos of dishes I have been preparing this summer, that I haven’t had time to post (and scarily enough, posts I had written right before the wedding, that I still have to post Bad, bad, blogger!).
DISCLAIMER: So be forewarned that some of the upcoming posts aren’t going to be seasonal for most of my lovely readers. I see that there are Autumnal posts all over the blogosphere, and although the weather is a little less humid here, we are still very much in the throes of summertime, here in Florida! (OH HOW I MISS THE FALL!!!)
We are going to be heading to New England for our annual trip in October and my goal is to post all my backlog before then. So that when I come back, I have all fresh material!
So before this gets too out of date, here are the lovely ice cream recipes for you that I promised over a week ago! *blush*
Here are the next two installments of the Ice Cream Diaries…

Lemon-Ricotta Ice Cream
I had some leftover ricotta cheese in the fridge and I had seen Laurie from Dalla Mia Cucina make a Ricotta and Rum Gelato and I thought – there you go! That’s what I want to do with my leftover ricotta! I had about a cup left, so I decided to fill in the rest with whole milk and Greek yogurt.
A while back I had made some lemon-ricotta muffins that I found on Rosa’s Yum Yums that were awesome so I decided that I wanted to make lemon-ricotta ice cream. Also I have been trying to find a solution to the super hard ice cream texture that most of our ice cream has (to the point that we have to take it out of the freezer 40 minutes before we want to eat it!!!), and since I know vodka doesn’t freeze, I put a nice shot of vanilla vodka into the mix. Just for texture purposes! It worked really well! So now I know the trick to making softer ice cream!
Click through for recipe and for the Mango-Organe Sorbetto….AND the MEME!
Lemon-Ricotta Ice Cream
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup part skim ricotta cheese
1 cup Greek yogurt
2 1/2 cups whole milk
1 TBS vanilla extract
1/2 cup raw sugar
rind from one lemon
1 shot of vanilla vodka
METHOD:
In a large mixing bowl blend ricotta, yogurt, milk and sugar until well blended. Add vanilla and lemon rind and mix for another minute. Stir in the vanilla vodka. Pour mixture into the bowl of your ice cream maker and follow the manufacturers directions. My ice cream maker calls for a churning time of 25 minutes. This time I let it go for about 40.
Mango-Orange Sorbetto
(sorry no picture)
Our friends Erin and Chris from The Olive Notes were having a potluck dinner at their house in which the theme was Foods made with Alcohol. Immediately I knew what I wanted to make! I had a few mangoes in the fridge and I knew how well this experiment of mine was going with making ice cream with booze, so I decided to spread the wealth!
This is super refreshing and great for those last days of summer! The perfect adult slushie!
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 half mangoes
pinch of salt
3 cups water
1/4 cup agave nectar
2 0z. vanilla vodka
1/2 cup pure Valencia OJ
METHOD:
Puree the mango with the sugar in a food processor. In a large bowl combine the water and agave and add the mango puree. Stir in vodka and orange juice. Pour mixture into the bowl of your ice cream maker and follow the manufacturers directions.

The mango sorbetto is definitely my choice of the day….I will have mine with the smallest spoon available so that it will last long!!!!!!
nina - September 9, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Oooops, I forgot, congrats on the award!!!!!
Esi - September 9, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Both of those sound so great! Congrats on the award.
kat - September 9, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Isn’t the vodka addition a wonder?! I just used it in some granita & its so nice not to end up with an ice block
City Girl - September 9, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I am starting to think my next wishlist cookware item is going to be an ice cream maker
Every time you post an ice cream recipe, I sigh and tell myself I should consider it
Re the cooked celery — does that mean you don’t like dishes that start with the onion/celery/carrot type combo as well? (I am thinking soups and jambalaya) Or do you just leave it out? My issue with needing celery for a recipe is that I invariably forget to buy it, so always end up adding more onions/carrots/whatever else is in the beginning.
erin :: the olive notes - September 9, 2008 at 2:43 pm
oh how I would love an ice-cream maker (not really, b/c I don’t need anymore gadgets…but I would love to taste what comes out of it
)
RecipeGirl - September 9, 2008 at 2:54 pm
You’ve definitely been a busy girl, and we appreciate all you’ve done!
That lemon ice cream looks pretty much tdf, especially with that fresh fig in it!
Judy - September 9, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Oh Yummmmm. Why won’t he buy me an ice cream machine??? I guess the “no more kitchen appliances” counts there. There has to be a loop hole somewhere!
Looks great Jenn!
beth - September 9, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Give me some of that mango orange sorbetta now!! Just wish the weather was warm over here – we haven’t had a summer!!
Michele - September 9, 2008 at 3:59 pm
ooooo…french fries and milkshakes! I used to love dipping my fries into my milkshake.
Love the fresh fig in your ice cream. I had pumpkin ice cream last night with fresh figs. Now that the weather is cooler I crave ice cream.
courtney - September 9, 2008 at 4:39 pm
You always have a way with the ice creams ans sorbets.
Ben - September 9, 2008 at 5:03 pm

The ice cream diaries: wouldn’t that be a good name for an ice cream store?
As always, this dish looks insanely tasty. Love this combo
Peter - September 9, 2008 at 5:59 pm
I’m totally diggin’ the lemon ricotta gelato…I imagine it tastes like those tarts.
Also, I just amended my blog with the new widget for the blog roll…lookin’ good and thanks for your efforts to improve it!
maybelles mom (feeding maybelle) - September 9, 2008 at 6:14 pm
wow did I love the smurfs too (the song is now running through my head.) Anyway, I love mango sorbet; this one sounds particularly good.
Arlene - September 9, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I’m not a big ice cream eater, but would like the lemon ricotta, for sure. The fig, on the other hand, is right up my alley. I could eat dozens of fresh figs!!!! We were very humid here in NY today. My best friend and my cousin both have places in St. Augustine. I visited in February and it’s a lovely city. My second home is on the other coast, on Longboat Key. I trust it’s equally humid there. We’re heading down next week for a short visit, so hope the hurricanes are gone by then.
Nikki - September 9, 2008 at 7:45 pm
I love these ice creams with ricotta. I’ve never sweetened ricotta…or maybe I have and don’t remember.. Anyhow, I have to try this some time. I’m not ready to retire the Cusinart from ice cream making. I made a coconut sorbet the other day and I added a little too much Godiva liquer (it ended up being too soft). But the results were yummy, just the same.
Peter G - September 9, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I love your whole series on the “ice cream diaries”…I’d definitely go with the Lemon ricotta ice cream.
Brittany - September 9, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Oh- I’ve gotsta try that lemon ricotta ice cream! I have never tried an ice cream made with ricotta, but I imagine it’s sinfully dee-lish!
…I LOVE LOVE LOVE Tom Robbins!! One of his books takes place right in my neighborhood! (Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas)
melissa - September 9, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Of course you love Anne Rice, you LOTR and Buffy fan, you.
I also love thunderstorms.
Ice cream? Not so much. But nice job!
Bellini Valli - September 9, 2008 at 9:37 pm
All I need is spoon and I can enjoy these icecream and sorbetto desserts any time if the year:D

Ley - September 10, 2008 at 12:10 am
Birch trees are my favourite trees. Well…they tie with Gingkos.
Pshh- I keep trying to make fall-ish food, but it’s still so bloody hot here that it’s just not as appreciated. I still appreciate your summery food posts!
Hot Garlic - September 10, 2008 at 5:20 am

kittie - September 10, 2008 at 8:34 am
Just as I was starting to accept the end of summer, and embrace the stodge… you go and show me something like this – with all the requisite sun cravings!!!
Ivy - September 10, 2008 at 9:20 am
It’s so hot here, wish I had some of that lemon ricotta ice cream. It sounds perfect.
Dharm - September 10, 2008 at 9:20 am
Yummm..those desserts look just yummy! I would never have thought of using Ricotta to make ice cream but then again, I have hand and enjoyed a Cheesecake kind of Ice Cream at Baskin Robbins!! I used to like the Smurfs too although they weren’t my fave. I wish they had cartoons like that nowadays….
Núria - September 10, 2008 at 9:42 am
That picture is stunning Jenn! I’m liking my screen!!! Aaaahhhhh there’s cheese in it, ai, ai. Cheese is everywhere… the earth is a big huge cheese… ;D Nope, I didn’t smoke anything, I’m just happy today
I love thunderstorms too, but not the ones you get in Florida sometimes.
Maria - September 10, 2008 at 11:24 am

The Leftover Queen - September 10, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Thanks Everyone!
Thanks Nina! Me too – I like to eat my treats with a small utensil and also very small bites!
Thanks on both fronts, Esi!
I know, Kat! It was quite the revelation!
Tell me about it City Girl! I was so happy once I finally got mine after dreaming about it for years.
Yeah, I leave celery out of the onion, carrot celery deal. It is just too gross for me. I have just gotten to where I will eat raw celery.
Well Erin, you are probably the closest person here to getting that wish!
Thanks so much RecipeGirl! Yeah, I think that one is one of my favorites yet!
We have got to find the loophole Judy!
I am sorry, Beth! I really wish I could give you some – we’ve got excess here!
Me too Michele – about the milkshakes and fries. I love pumpkin ice cream – did you get it from TJs? I love eating pumpkin ice cream in the fall, and plan to eat lots of it when we go to New England soon!
Thanks Courtney!
We do too, Ben! I love me some ice cream all the time! I gotta try your horchata!
Yeah, Dawn, that does sound like a good name!
Thanks so much Peter! It was pretty great, I must admit! Glad you like the new look!
Thanks MM! I know, that song is an easy ear worm!
Hey Arlene, I am so with you on the fresh figs! looks like everything is free of hurricanes at this point – but you never know! I hope you have a great trip!
Hey Nikki! Nope, my Cuisinart won’t get retired at all either! LOL! That coconut sorbet sounds fantastic!
Thanks Peter! That would be my pick too!
Really Brittany! That is so fun – I haven’t read that one…must put on list. I would love to see you take on a ricotta ice cream!
No ice cream, Melissa? Really? Wow. I’ll take your portion then!
Yeah, my tastes are becoming rather obvious!
Be my guest, Val!
Thanks Party! I hope you enjoy it! So much fun!
Oh yeah, I like gingkos too Ley! So pretty! Glad you are still liking the summery posts – I too am longing for fall!
Hey Natalie! Thanks! Yeah, newlywed and loving every minute of it!
Thanks for the comment!
Yes, the coffee, Emiline! There will be lots and lots more of that to come when we get back. I am SO excited I can barely stand it!
You are going away soon too, right?
Thanks Dee! We are working on it! Tricky wordpress.com!
Well, Sylvia! You should totally try it! I think you would love it!
Thanks for the celery support, Grace. It is usually in things like soups and stews and it is gross.
I know Kittie! It was after reading your post about your mum’s steak pie that made me realize how OUT of season some of my upcoming posts are going to be LOL!
I wish I could teleport some to you Ivy!
What was your fav Dharm? You should try your hand at a ricotta ice cream!
Thanks Nuria! You are so funny! I do wish the Earth was a huge cheese! That would so make my life!
I promise you can’t tell there is cheese in this! Try it!
Yum Maria! I can’t wait to check out your cookies!
farida - September 10, 2008 at 2:42 pm
What a coincidence – I just posted something something lemon-ricotta too:) Love your ice cream idea! And congrats on your award!
jen of a2eatwrite - September 10, 2008 at 3:40 pm
That vodka trick is too cool! And these both sound like marvelous recipes.
Laurie - September 10, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Hey I love that kick!! I am so glad someone else is enjoying there ricotta on ice!
Thank you for the mention.. I just saw this today. Ciao and hugs.. and I’m glad to see Ike is giving florida a break this time around!
Marie - September 11, 2008 at 10:47 am
Lemon and ricotta would be my choice! Yumm! I saw Laurie’s back then and loved hers too! I think next summer I’m getting an ice cream machine for sure!!!
toontz - September 12, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Jen-
These both sound delicious. I did decide to (ask, lol) buy the ice cream attachment to my Kitchenaid mixer for my birthday gift. I have been on the lookout for frozen dessert recipes ever since. I can’t wait to try the lemon-ricotta! (I personally think ice-cream and frozen desserts have their place in every season!!)
Sam Sotiropoulos - September 14, 2008 at 10:32 pm
