Hi there!
This is my first time visiting your site, it looks great.

While you were up in the Northeast Kingdom, you should have checked out Sterling College! We're 20 minutes from Morrisville and Hardwick- its an small (about 100 folks) environmental school with a lot going on in terms of sustainable agriculture. We work hard to grow a lot of our own food in our gardens, raise our own meat, and buy as much as we can locally.

Same for me Maggie - 1976!!! We have the exact same b-day! Never met anyone who had my exact b-day before!!! Yes, I understand what you are saying about the colder climate, stronger community mentality. I think it has to do with a certain kind of mentality being attracted to a colder climate and or, being willing to deal with the cold, because there are other things about the place that are worth it, and because there is less people, more community- and that bringing people closer together.

I think the personal relationships that can develop from trying to eat more locally are fantastic. Though I'll always be envious of the eggplant I've seen you find at the Florida farmer's market in May, I understand completely the move to a colder place because of the community. Our own move was motivated in much the same way. Of the new friends we're making quite a few come about in my search for better, local food.

Happy (belated) Birthday!! I'm a 12th baby too, 1976 for me.

What an amazing place it must be! It is inspiring to know that locales exist that put so much emphasis on all the things you talked about. One can only hope that Vermont will lead the country into a new decade, filled with new awareness of what we consume and community pride. I just know how happy you are going to be there and I'm glad you found a place that fits you so well!

Oh my, Jenn. No wonder you want to live up there so badly :D Sometimes I think that eating locally can be such a pain, but it doesn't have to be that way. If more establishments did it right like the ones you mentioned, it wouldn't seem so hard for the rest of us. Very nice post!

Those are some really interesting observations, Jeff, and I agree with you. In fact I was once one of those people, who felt good doing just half of what I have to do now to feel good when it comes to these issues. It is a learning process to be sure, but that is the danger, that you never get past the buzzword. There is a big difference between a local restaurant, that is not a chain, owned by locals (which is better than a chain) that makes there own foods from scratch and one that also uses as much local food in that process as well. Many are losing that last vital step. But hopefully as more restaurants try to adopt that practice, more people will know that it can be done, and then hopefully question why it isn't being done in other restaurants. Sometimes for various reasons, it is not possible to do that. But just be honest about it and what you are doing.

Eating good, feeling good! It's that simple, right? I guess that we are lucky here with the climate, the local farmers and the food in general: fresh fish, beef from the Pyreenes, best oranges.... Maybe instead of Vermont, you should have thought about Barcelona ;D.

A great post Jenn.

I think most people as a whole just need a buzzword to make them feel like they are making a difference. They do not actually do the due diligence and work to see if the item is local, sustainable, organic, humane treated, etc.

Heck there are a couple guys at the farmer's market I know to avoid because they are buying produce off the shelf and marking it up because they know people will pay. Another great scam here is a local butcher shop that just runs to Sam's Club, buys meat, and marks it up 3x. People just assume oh it is from a butcher shop so it is top notch stuff.

Last year I was out in San Diego and noticed the same trend you were seeing in Vermont. One restaurant in particular I was talking to the owner and all the specials were items the chef grabbed from a local farm that day. He also ended up doing his own meat curing and baking because the quality was superior.

Unfortunately a majority of people are to lazy to actually do any real work for their food. They are happy with the standard norm of dyed meat, gassed veggies, etc. Which is sad :-(
