Simply Sugar & Gluten-Free

I am a regular reader of Amy’s blog. Amy has been living a GF and sugar free lifestyle for over 6 years. I know I have been trying to reduce sugar and gluten in my own diet, and so I understand the challenges with eating this way. But Amy’s blog is a source of delicious and inspired recipes. When I visit her blog, I can’t even believe that her recipes are free of anything, because they certainly are not free of flavor, texture and overall yumminess. I find Simply Sugar & Gluten Free to be not only informative, but also inspiring.

The Old Hen Blog

The Old Hen is a Bed and Breakfast located in The Snoqualmie Valley of Washington State. It is run by husband and wife team Deanna and John who had started talking about opening a B&B together even when they were just dating! So if you are looking for a place to stay near Seattle, or just to have a getaway, check out their B&B’s website . Their blog is all about the food, and Deanna has been cooking up a lot of Julia Child’s recipes lately, so you want to be sure to check it out!

Bake List

Written by a college student from California who is currently residing in Illinois. This blog is fairly new, only about 2 months old, but it looks like it has been around much longer. The photography is drool-worthy and the recipes, well they are just as tantalizing. There is also a wonderful travelogue of a recent European tour. But even at that, the food takes a top spot. For example, check out the most recent post about German coffee, Rudesheim Coffee. YUM.

Eatin’ on the Cheap

This blog is all about eating well, without spending a lot of money! Something we could all use every now and again. Author JodieMo has been cooking and baking since childhood and has worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years. But it isn’t all about food, she also loves photography (which is a great pairing when you are a food blogger!). She is now mom to twins, which means that cooking for her family on a budget has become a part of life. Check out her blog for great ideas on cooking delicious meals on a budget!

NutriChef’s Blog

“ This blog is dedicated to combining helpful nutritional information with a culinary flair. It is my hope to encourage people to eat healthier but enjoy what you are eating.” Sounds like a good philosophy to me! Check out the latest post for an Orange Lime Cilantro Sauce.  A recipe that was recreated after tasting a delicious chicken dish at a restaurant! I am sure this sauce would be a winner on shrimp or other seafood as well!

That’s it for this week! I hope you enjoyed this week’s FFF. Remember, if you would like to see a blog featured here, who is part of the FBR please visit the forum and nominate them.

Savory Sweet Life

Alice has been a part of the food industry in various capacities for a long time. First on the food service industry, then on to owning her own wedding cake business, and now as a freelancer and blogger! She specializes in everything from baking, to last minute dishes and dishes with flair. Her blog is just as well rounded, and you will enjoy her mouthwatering photos, especially during this season with super fresh cuisine at her disposal!

Madurai Style

This blog is full of recipies from Madurai in India. I have always enjoyed Indian food, but it wasn’t until I became a part of the blogging community that I have learned so much about Indian cuisine, and also realize how much more I have to learn about it! There are so many regional specialities, the possibilities are endless! If you want to spice up your kitchen Priyameena’s blog is a great place to start! She shares with you both her good and bad experiences in the kitchen.

The Austerity Kitchen

The Austerity kitchen is dedicated to the best in austere fare, past and present. From the Victorian era, to the Great Depression to contemporary austere cuisine, the blog showcases the best and tastiest recipes from hard times. Each month, as part of their “Austerity Kitchen Challenge” a new recipe is developed to feature inexpensive and readily available ingredients that is neither bland nor humdrum. An example, Lazy Pierogi, which is similar to a dish I created some time ago.

Cook, Eat & Live

This blog is written by a “gal in Singapore”, nicknamed, Xiaopang. There are a lot of delicious recipes on her blog that are totally new to me, which I find to be very exciting! I always love learning new things about food, and various cuisines, so a blog like this is always a goldmine of information! For example, did you know that rice pizza is common in Japan and other Asian countries, and their love of rice has created amazing dishes like, rice burgers? To learn more, check out this blog!

The Cookie Shop

This blog is written by Paula in Brazil and it is her virtual bakery! She loves to bake, and started making too many sweet things. As a way to prevent herself from gaining weight she gave away her goodies to friends, who then told their friends about it and they started to make orders and so she had a little business going! This makes her virtual bakery, less fictional! You will be amazed by some of her combinations and I am sure will find inspiration for your next baking endeavor!

That’s it for this week! I hope you enjoyed this week’s FFF. Remember, if you would like to see a blog featured here, who is part of the FBR please visit the forum and nominate them.

August Royal Foodie Joust Winners, and this month’s ingredients!

icon-foodie-joust

The Royal Foodie Joust is an awesome and fun monthly peer voted competition that is hosted on The LeftoverQueen/FoodieBlogroll Forum! It gets better each and every month as the competition gets stiffer and more creative, as Jousters try to outdo each other! It is also one of the friendliest competitions I have ever seen. So please don’t be intimidated to come and join us this month in another round!

We don’t bite, unless of course there is real food in our faces ;)

The only rules for the competition is that each Jouster create only one dish and each entry must feature three ingredients in common.

This competition has been referred to many times as the “Iron Chef” of the Food Blogosphere. Each month’s ingredients are chosen by the previous month’s Best Overall Entry winner. The Best Overall winner of each Joust not only wins the Queen’s favor, bragging rights and a cool icon to put on their blog, but is also awarded with a super awesome Royal Foodie Joust Apron! There are also prizes for the winners of the other two categories: Best Photo and Most Unique Interpretation

So what are you waiting for? Come over and join us this month!

If you would like to participate in this month’s Joust, be sure to submit your entry by 12 NOON, Eastern Standard USA time on the First of the following Month (Sept. 1, 2009)!

If you have an idea you would like to share about how to make the Joust a better community event, please join us in discussing it here.

Now onto the winners of this month’s event. The ingredients for this month were chosen by last month’s Best Overall winner, Betherann from Kitchen Courage who has been a regular Jouster for quite some time, and is currently training for her first trialthalon! The ingredients she chose were Banana, Honey and Tumeric. These ingredients were a little on the exotic side for some Jousters, but isn’t that what the Joust is all about, getting creative? What better way to get creative then by working with some new ingredients and combinations?! As a result, we had a lot of very interesting entries! But there can only be one winner in each category, and each month making that call gets harder! Onto those winning entries now!

The winner in the Best Overall Category is Raquel from Cafe Nilson with her Spicy Banana Zucchini Balls.

spicy_banana_zucchini_balls_by_cafenilson

I am happy to admit that she got my vote! I thought that her creative use of ingredients, to make something that would be really delicious and original was spot on. Congratulations Raquel! I hope you enjoy your apron! :)

The next category was for The Best Photo! As we all know food photography is a major skill for food bloggers, and so in this category your photo has to be good enough to eat. In this case, it was decided that the entry that most fit that category is Sweet Banana Curry Shrimp by LK from Healthy.Delicious.

sweet_banana_curry_shrimp_by_healthydelicious

Her multi-layered dish really looked good! Perfect for fresh summer eating!

The final Joust category to be voted on is Most Unique Interpretation of the ingredients. This is where people can really get in touch with wild creativity and try something new. Rob aka gfron1 from The Curious Blogquat won this category with a Pacific Martini.

pacific_martinis_by_gfron1

If you have never visited The Curious Blogquat, I will tell you that it features a lot of interesting food ideas and techniques, inspired by molecular gastronomy. So you can guess that this recipe was rather intricate, indeed, and a wonderful summer cocktail!

Thanks again to all the participants for another great Joust! :)

If you would like to see all the entries please check them out here!

******************************************************************************

Now for this month’s ingredients. Racquel has chosen another set of really interesting ingredients:

Papaya (ripe or green)
Tarragon
Cheese

I know these ingredients may be a challenge for some of you, put I do suggest to take this as an opportunity to really take your cooking skills to another level  and just have FUN! So please join us here !

Brown Eyed Baker

Sometimes you visit a food blog, and as your scroll through the first page, the photos of the food just jump out at you. Maybe it is the photography, or maybe it is just the food itself. I am not sure, but I know that is what happened to me when I visited this blog. It made me hungry. Although Michelle’s blog focuses on baking, there is also quite a nice cross section of other recipes – like soups, ice cream, salads and breakfast. But the one that really caught my eye was Eggplant Lasagna Tart with Pamesan Basil Crust – not all baked good have to be sweet!

Annie’s Eats

Annie is a resident physician and mom to a beautiful son – so she doesn’t have much free time. But when she does, she loves to cook! What I love about her blog is that she states in her “about” section that although she has learned a lot about photography along her way, she keeps her “beginners” photos up to show that “everyone starts somewhere and has the potential to improve”! Nicely said Annie! Her most recent post Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic looks so good!

Red Chillies

This blog is written by Supriya and the inspiration for her blog’s title comes from the food of her native city, Bangalore, India, where chilies, coconut and tamarind are featured in their everyday cooking. This is a blog of vegetarian recipes, but I promise you, everyone can find something beautiful to eat here. Just look at those photos and tell me they don’t make you hungry!

Powerfulpierre’s Weblog

The first expat book I ever read was A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle. It was given to me by my French teacher when I graduated from high school. I caught the travel bug in high school, because growing up in the DC area, you go to school with a lot of kids of foreign diplomats. So I relished this book, never having traveled abroad by that point in my life. Since then I have always enjoyed reading books (and now blogs) authored by expats. Although I enjoy reading about other countries from the perspective of natives, I find that expats have a very unique way at looking at their adoptive country. Powerfulpierre and his wife moved to France to get away from the rat race of the UK, to live a quieter, simpler life and to a large extent they believe they have achieved that goal. His latest post about two parties and a funeral really give a look into what it is like to live in France.

Kara Cooks

Losing nearly 100 lbs can really change the way you look at food. For this blogger, who did just that about a year ago, it also changed the way she cooks, significantly. She says it has made her “aware of not just what I was eating but where it comes from and how buying it, fixing it, and eating it impacts the world around me”. She shares her journey into whole and local foods with all of us on her blog. Her photos are also mouthwatering. So be sure to check it out!

That’s it for this week! I hope you enjoyed this week’s FFF. Remember, if you would like to see a blog featured here, who is part of the FBR please visit the forum and nominate them.

I NEED NOMINATIONS!!!!!! I know we all have our favorite blogs that we read everyday, and I would love to know about them. Local Lemons
This blog is written by a New Yorker who escaped Brooklyn with her husband for the sunny skies of Berkeley, CA. Although they left many family and friends in NYC, their desire for a slower life moved them to start a new adventure together across the country. The original recipes here give you a look at all natural ingredients that can be found by living sustainably and locally year round in the East Bay area of CA. Ingredients they found were similar to what they thought you could only find in Italy! Allison says: “Living for the environment and for your community, and not just for yourself, is more rewarding than I ever imagined. You have to live it to understand.” Well we can get a taste of this through her blog. The photos are gorgeous, and I am absolutely drooling over the tomatoes on this pizza

Forking Delicious
This is the blog of Private chef and cookbook author David Lawrence. His book A Private Chef Cooks Simple Gourmet, (Lake Isle Press) is all about having fun in the kitchen. David’s humorous style and easy to follow recipes will help even the most timid cook feel like a kitchen rock star! I really love his very first post that explains why a cookbook writer would want to write a blog.  I think it has some great insight, and reaffirms many of my reasons for blogging!

Evil Shenanigans
Written by a part time culinary student who loves baking up desserts and bread! But there is way more on this blog than just baked goods – there are main meals, Like Creamy Orzo and Mushroom Pasta , soups, like Spicy Red Bean or a delicious Croque Madame Panini.  I am not sure about the shenanigans, but the food looks good! However if you are worried about how evil her shenanigans are…“Not too evil, just evil enough!” I guess you’ll have to see for yourself!

Anice & Cannella
“Anise & Cinnamon” is an Italian blog, written in Italian. This is the first time that I have featured a blog not written in English, because many times I am not sure what to say about the blogger, if I can’t read their “about me” section. However, luckily this blog has it in both English and Italian! What really blew me away with this blog is how beautiful the photography is! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and that really is the case here! After reading the “about me” I can see why they are so good. This is what Paoletta says: “This blog is unpretentiously born, but just with the desire to merge my two great passions: cooking and photography. While I love cooking in all its expressions I particularly like the recipes coming from the tradition. And I’m also strongly persuaded that with the aid of photography I could be able to fix them indelibly in time, together with the gestures and the feelings that tie them to us.”

Blue Jean Gourmet

This blog is written by Nishta, The Blue Jean Gourmet, who like most of us, is “pretty much always thinking about food”. She says that cooking is her favorite way to show affection and she has quite a team of professional family and friends on her side that I am sure welcome their lucky stars to recieve that affection! Her team includes her spouse, Jill who is an awesome food stylist, corn bread maker, grill-master, vegetable gardener and bird hunter. Sonya, their food photographer who is “paid” for her skills with her favorites: margaritas and fried plantains. Then there is Heather, the technology goddess – her skills really allowed The Blue Jean Gourmet to be born. See what can happen when a few good friends get together and just have fun putting their combined skills together? Yummy things. Like Berry Champagne Granita from last week!

That’s it for this week! I hope you enjoyed this week’s FFF. Remember, if you would like to see a blog featured here, who is part of the FBR please visit the forum and nominate them.

A Broad on Broadway

This blog is written by a foodie couple who recently moved to New York City and are enjoying exploring their new home city by dining at restaurants. Their blog posts reviews of the placed they enjoy (and didn’t). So many cuisines! This is a great blog to check out if you find yourself traveling to The Big Apple.

Swallowing The Seasons

This blog takes a seasonal approach to eating and drinking. Melinda enjoys combining what’s growing in the garden or sitting on the pantry shelf to make something delicious. Which is something I can certainly relate to! Check out her Vietnamese Spring Rolls perfect for easy summertime fare!

Eat Well, Eat Cheap

“Quit that restaurant habit and shrink that bar bill. Here’s how to cook delicious meals at home – and find wine bargains for less than $10 a bottle”. That is the description of this blog’s inspiration. Lots of cooking with fresh CSA veggies and reviews of wine.

My Boyfriend Dated a Chef

This blog was started by Karalee whose boyfriend used to date a chef. That being the case, when the couple got together, she decided she needed to step up her game and get some cooking chops of her own! This blog features her favorite recipes, and the little tips and tricks she has learned along the way – everything from shortcuts to meals that take 2-3 hours of preparation! It is all here.

Fruitcake or Nuts

I just love this blog title…it brings up so many different images! This blog is authored by Shayne, a 33 year old Michigan woman who just moved to Mexico. She is married to a British born Serbian and they have two beautiful children. Cooking is her pastime and source of relaxation. She writes her blog for her love of food, cooking and to keep a record of what has been tried, or what she may want to try or what others try that looks interesting!

Sorry this post is a little later than usual today – but today was the day we said goodbye to my fabulous step-daughters, Rachel and Gwen, who returned to their home in CT today. I don’t know what I am going to do now without my kitchen helpers! ;) But I am proud to say that while they were here, they both started blogs! I think eventually everyone in our family will be a blogger!

Anyway, as always here is what the FFF is all about. Finest Foodies Friday! FFF is a weekly Friday post featuring favorites from The Foodie Blogroll! We do this so we can share in the rich diversity of what The Foodie Blogroll has to offer by featuring some of our favorites and yours!

Gastronomer’s Guide

This blog is written by Joseph whose inspiration for blogging is to “celebrate the world of gastronomy in both the simple and elegant forms, from basic home cooking to elaborate restaurant cuisine. My aim is to teach, entertain, and expand the reader’s/eater’s fundamental experience with food into the extraordinary by exploring science, history, culture, cooking, dining, and eating.” The pictures are seriously drool-worthy.

SoCal Sustenance

Laura is an East Coast girl who shares her misadventures in learning to love the bounty of her new home in California. Her latest recipe for Peanut and Panko Crusted Chicken Nuggets with a Thai Satay sauce looks like a yummy weekend dish to me!

Stile Mediterraneo

Stile Mediterraneo means Mediterranean Way of Life. In Puglia, in Southern Italy, sisters Cinzia and Marika give a perspective of life in their beautiful region of Italy through blogging about the food and wine of the area. They also hold culinary and wine classes for those who wish to travel to Puglia to learn more first hand! Who knows, maybe the next time we are in Italy, we will stop by!

Feasts and Fotos

Susan from New York City is the writer behind this blog. She shares her adventures in the kitchen, behind the lens and on the road as she enjoys her hobbies of cooking, photography and travel! Her Independence Day Stuffed Potatoes look absolutely delicious!

Little House

This blog is written by a Vietnamese couple living in Singapore – talk about awesome food cultures! The original blog was written in Vietnamese, but this is the English version. Just like my blog, she does the cooking, and he does the photography! There are some really beautiful and unique (to me) recipes on this blog, and yummy photos accompanying each post!

The Cookie Blog

If you love cookies, this blog is for you! The blog is written by Tiffany, who learned how to bake from her grandmother at a very young age. Today she bakes her family’s traditional cookie recipes (and more!) in the same kitchen her grandmother baked in when she was young. Her blog has a cookie for every taste and her photos really get your mouth watering!

Nosh and Tell

The slogan of this blog is: “Everything tastes better with a dash of sass”! I like it. This blog is written by Whitney and Ariel. Whitney grew up with gourmet chef mom. Now she has her own love for food and uses food to bring people together. Ariel has transformed her way of looking at food from sustenance to a way of life! She gets inspiration from cooking shows and The Food Network. Go ahead and check out their blog!

Yummy, Yummy, in my Tummy

This blog is for those who love to cook and bake (which is likely all of us!). It is written by a stay at home mom who loves watching the Food Network and Martha Stewart to get new ideas. She also has a definite penchant for cupcakes!

4th Sense Samayal

This is a blog written by Nithya who is new to experimenting in the kitchen. Although it is hard to tell with all her delicious recipes and tantalizing food photography! If you enjoy Indian cooking, this is a great blog to check out for new ideas!

Cuisine de Jan

Jan is a self taught gourmet cook who loves to share her kitchen creations with others. Her blog is full of wonderful French recipes as well as international cuisine. She’s got it all! Her latest post is for Vichyssoise something I have always wanted to try!

We have a very diverse food community, and I would love to see more of the blogs you love featured. We also have a lot of humanitarians out in the Foodie Blogosphere. If you think there is a food blogger out there that deserves a little recognition for their culinary skills, or what they are doing to help the world through the lens of food, please tell us about them!!! Please post your favorite Foodie Blogroll foodblogs here.

Also we all love to know how people came to find our blogs, so please visit all of our featured bloggers today and don’t forget to tell them that you found them via Finest Foodies Friday! They would love to have your feedback.
