April Royal Foodie Joust Winners!

icon-foodie-joust

The Royal Foodie Joust is an awesome and fun monthly peer voted competition that is hosted on
The LeftoverQueen/FoodieBlogroll Forum! It gets better each and every month as the competition gets stiffer as Jousters try to outdo each other every month! It is also one of the friendliest competitions I have ever seen. So please don’t be intimidated to come and join us this month in another round!

We don’t bite, unless of course there is real food in our faces.

The only rules for the competition is that each Jouster create one dish and each entry must feature three ingredients in common. This competition has been referred to many times as the “Iron Chef” of the Food Blogosphere. Each month’s ingredients are chosen by the previous month’s Best Overall Entry winner. The Best Overall winner of each Joust not only wins the Queen’s favor, bragging rights and a cool icon to put on their blog, but is also awarded with a super awesome Royal Foodie Joust apron! There are also prizes for the winners of the other two categories: Best Photo and Most Unique Interpretation

So what are you waiting for? Come over and join us this month!

If you would like to participate in this month’s Joust, be sure to submit your entry by 12 NOON, Eastern Standard USA time on the First of the following Month!

If you have an idea you would like to share about how to make the Joust a better community event, please join us in discussing it here

Now onto the winners of this month’s event. The ingredients for this month were chosen by last month’s Best Overall winner, 5 Star Foodie :

Asparagus (white or green)
Lemongrass
Almonds

The Best Overall Winner also won the Best Photo entry as well, and it is husband and wife team Peter and Christey from FotoCuisine (he cooks, she photos) with their Almond Crusted Asparagus Rolls with Lemongrass Hollandaise.

05_almond_crusted_asparagus_rolls_with_lemongrass_hollandaise_by_petermarcus

Now trust me on this when I tell you that Peter is a master at classic French sauces, especially hollandaise. I know this information first hand because I was able to enjoy it on a nice eggs benedict he prepared for Roberto and I when we went to visit them a few months ago so I was happy to see that his winning entry included this sauce. I am a huge fan of both Peter and Christey’s blog AND sushi and so this entry really caught my attention, I think the flavors really work well with each other, and I just loved the creativity! Plus, you must admit that is some serious food porn! Great work guys! Thanks so much for participating in this event and for putting out such an inspired creation. If you are not familiar with Peter and Christey’s blog, FotoCuisine, you really need to check them out. They are both extremely good at what they do and great people besides.

Another foray into creativity is this month’s winner for Most Unique Interpretationwhich is Asparagus Ice Cream in Almond-Lemongrass Cookie Cupsby LK from Healthy Delicious.

08_asparagus_ice_cream_in_almond_lemongrass_cookie_cups_by_healthydelicious

This recipe was inspired by an asparagus ice cream they had at a Belgian restaurant. Apparently it tastes like asparagus, but it is really good. I can believe it too, because I once had garlic ice cream, and it was delicious! I love savory takes on normally sweet recipes, and this is no exception! This certainly was an extremely creative take on ice cream, and the cookie cups the ice cream is served in, are also a stroke of culinary genius all to themselves.

Thanks again to all the participants! :)
If you would like to see all the entries please check them out here.

Here is the challenge for this month! Really great food can look as good as it tastes.  So, Peter has chosen something a little different and picks “Red, Green, and White” as the ingredients.  Each cook should interpret “Red, Green and White” for themselves and come up with something really fun and interesting. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

So what are you waiting for? Come over and join us this month!

In case you have not joined us since the new year, we have made some changes to the way the Joust is run. We got a lot of feedback over the past few months on how the Royal Foodie Joust is run. The biggest problem was that people were having trouble picking just ONE favorite and wished for various categories to vote on.

So we decided to have a vote for 3 different categories: Best Overall, Best Photo and Most Unique Interpretation of the ingredients. The winner for best overall will win a Royal Foodie Joust Apron, and chose the next month’s ingredients. The winners for the Best Photo and Most Unique Interpretation will receive a Royal Foodie Joust Mug! :)

We have also changed the posting time to be 12 NOON, Eastern Standard USA time on the First of the Month. However, for this month only the post by date will be April 3, 2009 by 12 NOON, Eastern Standard USA time. So please join us!!!!

If you have an idea you would like to share about how to make the Joust a better community event, please join us in discussing it here!

Now onto the winner of this month’s event. The ingredients for this month were:

Satsuma (or any other orange citrus) – zest, fruit or juice
Shallots
Edible Flowers

This month’s choice of ingredients were chosen by the previous month’s overall winner, Angela, from Spinach Tiger who was inspired by the coming of Spring with her choice.

These ingredients spurred a lot of conversations and really got everyone into creative mode. I must admit although I was worried about participation, this turned out to be one of the best Jousts ever! So many clever ideas and uses. It really was amazing!

The winner of the Best Overall Entry category is Natasha from 5 Star Foodie with her Grilled Scallops with Flower Foam Watercress Salad and Orange Shallot Vinaigrette!

Doesn’t that look amazing??? Love all the colors – those grill marks on the scallops look beautiful!

The winner for Best Photo is Ben from What’s Cooking? with his Pumpkin Blossom and Blood Orange Chicken Dish!

03_pumpkin_blossom_and_blood_orange_chicken_dish_by_arimou0

Those blood oranges really POP in that photo! No wonder it won with such a lead!

The winner for Most Unique Interpretation of the ingredients is Toontz from Okara Mountain with her Shallot Sugar Crisps with Tangerine Zinger Ice Milk !

Caribbean Dreams: Royal Foodie Joust and a giveaway! Plus RFJ ingredients for this month!

Well everyone, this post is going to bring a lot of warmth to you today, I know a lot of my blogging buddies who are experiencing winter temps need that, right now!!!

icon-foodie-joust

This month we did a very special Royal Foodie Joust! My good friend Cynthia, from Tastes Like Home
has written a cookbook called My Caribbean Cookbook, Tastes Like Home.

blog-cover-tastes-like-home

She has been kind enough to offer a free copy to the winner of a RFJ Contest. So we decided to do a Joust based Caribbean ingredients.

The Ingredients for this special edition Joust were: Coconut (or Coconut Milk), Rice and Bananas

Here are some comments from Cynthia regarding the ingredients:
Bananas can be used in their green state – starchy or in their ripe stage, as a fruit. We’d prefer everyone to use the banana itself – green or ripe but if you want to use any variations of the banana component you can do so (yes, the leaf is acceptable). Whatever you make, it must be clear that the banana flavour is present.

The winner of the Joust this month was Elle, from Elle’s New England Kitchen with her second Joust win!
her entry was Bananas Foster Cupcakes .

08_bananas_foster_cupcakes_by_elles_new_england_kitchenjpg

To see the recipe, please check her blog – and I promise, if you haven’t been there before, you will want to check out some of her other recipes.

We are ready to announce the ingredients for this month’s Joust. These ingredients come to us from Billy from a table for two, who won the Joust in December.

He figured after the holiday season, people really wouldn’t be up for “fancy cooking” so he decided to focus his ingredients around simple fare.
So the ingredients for this month’s Joust are: mushroom, cauliflower, noodle. To participate, please post your entries here. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Also I would like to mention a great giveaway that my friend Bren over at FLANboyant Eats is doing an awesome giveaway of some of her favorite things to celebrate her 1 year blogoversary! – so please go check it out! :)
